Three
navigable rivers, including The Namekagon River, link 250 miles of
St.
Croix National Scenic Riverway.
The Namekagon, the northern tributary of the St. Croix river, lies
within Washburn County for almost 50 of it's 100 miles. The
Namekagon is being preserved in its natural free state for present
and future generations as part of the St. Croix National Scenic
Riverway.
The Riverway, one
of the eight original in the National Wild and Scenic River System
is managed by the National Park Service. The Service maintains
primitive campsites accessible by water only. No motorized craft are
allowed.
Most of the Namekagon is entirely undeveloped,
offering canoeists a genuine wilderness experience. The riverbanks
are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles, blue heron, and
even osprey and bald eagles. The Namekagon offers everything from
rapids for the experienced canoeist to wide quiet flowages below the
dams.
These waters join the St. Croix river west of here and
eventually flow into the Mississippi. For more info visit the

The
Visitors Center offers information, and exhibits on river history .
Books for all ages on river history and wildlife are for sale. The
Center is open weekdays beginning mid-May, daily July 4 through

Trout,
walleye and small-mouth bass fishermen can meet their challenge, and
there are a number of swimming beaches in the flowage areas. A float
down the river during fall color time is an experience not to be
missed. There are many access points along Hwy 63 east and west of
Trego.
Local outfitters offer
river travel by rented canoe, kayaks or inner tubes. They also
provide shuttle service up or down the Namekagon. |
