After receiving instructions at the stations, the kids will be given the opportunity to put on a worm and cast a line. Plenty of adult instructors will be available to assist the kids. August 2, 2014 *2nd Annual Long Lake Pontoon Flotilla -Meet at the Island Sandbar across from Pioneer. The goal is to tie as many pontoons together & establish a Long Lake Flotilla Record. Tie-up is from Noon-2pm. Must remained tied together until 3pm or after the aerial photos are complete. Each pontoon needs 4 good fenders & 4 good ropes, anchors are recommended. Dave's Outboard Barge will be anchored at The Sandbar. Pontoon captains have their choice to tie up on either line.

August 9-15,  2014-*Cedar and Canvas Canoe Building Class-The canoe building class will be limited to twelve students. A lottery will be held at the end of the class to decide who may go home with the canoe for the cost of materials. The cost of the class will be $700 for those enrolled before July 1st and $750 for those who enroll after that date. August 16, 2014 *WCHA Regional Assembly- You will want to be in Shell Lake, Wisconsin from 10am-5pm for the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association’s Upper Great Lakes Regional Assembly. The event will feature an assembly of dozens of vintage wooden canoes. Demonstrations of paddling and poling, canvassing a classic canoe, wilderness canoe campsite, paddle carving, others to be announced. Vendor booths will be selling canoe related items. Parade of Canoes from 7:30pm-8:30pm at the Shell Lake Beach Area. Bring the family and help WCHA celebrate 35 years as the world’s source for information about the history and design of the wooden canoe. On Sunday, August 17th we will have organized canoe outings around the area.

*AUG. 18, 2014-GHOST VISIT -For the 6th year, a play to dramatize the lives of actual people who lived in and around Washburn County will be performed. Local volunteers will tell the stories of folks who made significant contributions to their communities. The play is sponsored by the Washburn County Historical Society and written by Mary Olsen. August 19, 2014 Our annual twilight garden tour is a popular event. Come see demonstrations by university specialists as well as local master gardeners. There will be many displays and vegetable taste tests. See how our demonstration garden of annual flowers, vegetables and perennials have performed and get recommendations for your own gardens. October 11, 2014 *5K Zombie Run-Join us for a cryptic, fall evening 5K Zombie Run that will take runners through the haunted woods of Spooner! But beware of what's around the next bend...you may have to run for your life! Racers must sign a waiver before participating. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their scariest zombie attire. While registration is on an individual basis, racers are encouraged to run with friends (you may need a hand to hold!).
